Periscopes are fascinating optical instruments that can easily be made in the classroom or at home. They are specifically mentioned as part of the Light Topic for Year 6. The making of simple persicopes has been one of the most populat Science Opens Doors activities, and we provide templates for two versions below. Apart from the templates, you will need pieces of mirror – we use plastic mirrors from Ivydale Science and Technology Service – a full mirror costs £1.20, but you can cut at least 12 periscope pieces (3 cm x 3 cm) from each full mirror, making the cost/piece 10p, and so the cost/periscope 20p. (Ivydale will supply mirrors cut into pieces at no extra cost).
