Alum is a fairly cheap chemical, often used for making Crystals
It is also useful as a mordant, used with Dyes. As a mordant for dyes it was incredibly important for cloth-making in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, and a whole industry grew up around it on the North Yorkshire coast.
